Full Steam Ahead
A facial steam is one of the most relaxing at-home spa rituals in the land. It feels next level when it comes to self-care, and it's easy to boot, because you probably already have everything you need. A gentle yet effective steam can help boost circulation, loosen and unclog pores, hydrate skin and promote a healthy glow. I've always delighted in the rituals of skincare. I like to take my time, light a candle, and revel in the process of self-care (well before I'd ever heard the term self-care).
In the time of Covid-19, we're all spending more time inside, life is moving at a much slower pace - which isn't necessarily a terrible thing. You have the time now to spend a bit more time on your skin, breaking up monotonous routines with something that feels indulgent, luxurious, but that won't stress your wallet. Take this time to adopt this simple, DIY skin treat as part of your new normal routine. Make it a meditative moment, soothing your mind (if even just for a few minutes) and skin at the same time.
Mise en place: Prep your space and get supplies ready. You'll need a medium sized pot, heat resistant bowl, dried or fresh herbs (if you don't have a dedicated facial steam, cut open a few bags of organic tea, such as chamomile, or tear up some fresh parsley), and a large towel. Create a comfortable spot to sit at the dining room table because you'll be leaning over the pot, tented under your towel for a few minutes.
Fill the pot with water and bring to a low boil, removing from stove and transferring into a heat resistant bowl (I like Pyrex) when ready. While waiting for the water to boil, ensure there's no trace of makeup on your skin, then exfoliate.
Place the bowl where you'll be sitting, then add herbs to the hot water, allowing to steep for one minute.
Fully tent your head to capture the steam while positioning your face a few inches above the bowl. The steam should feel comfortable, not too hot. Sit and relax for 5 - 10 minutes over the bowl, depending on comfort level. I personally languish as long as possible.
When you're done, rinse skin well with cool water, gently pat dry, then finish with your normal skincare regime. If you're really feeling the process, follow up the steam with your favorite mask and then finish with your normal regime, which I hope includes a little bit of FoxSea.
I personally load up on all the oils after a good steam, packing my pores full of that golden goodness.
